It’s been said that music is a universal language, transcending borders and cultures. There’s a message in the music. This session will highlight various genres of music focusing on fatherhood.

It’s been said that music is a universal language, transcending borders and cultures. There’s a message in the music. This session will highlight various genres of music focusing on fatherhood.


Learning outcome
  • Participants will write to express their thoughts after listening to several songs (TBD)
  • Participants will do the following upon hearing musical selections: Sequence events, summarize ideas, identify conflicts and resolutions, and identify cause and effect relationships, analyze characters, & problem solutions through group discussion. 
  • Participants will reflect on their roles as a father; their relationship with fathers, and their relationship with their children.
Materials

journals (composition notebooks), PENS/PENCILS, Musical selections

Activity  1

TIME:   30-45 minutes  “Music to the Soul”

Participants will work in pairs/small groups listening to selected songs focusing on fatherhood.   

  • Have the fathers create a flow map. (see example below)
  • In each box, fathers will write a major event that a song evokes. 
  • The major events should be arranged in the order in which song stimulates as a man and father.  
  • Encourage the fathers to use no more than 6 boxes.
  • Encourage fathers to express how they got here.
